Reston Town Center Station.

Construction has begun on one very visible element of the Dulles Airport Station along Phase 2 of the Silver Line: a wind screen that will complete the station’s iconic shape while blocking gusts of up to 120 mph.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which is overseeing construction of the Metro extension known as the Silver Line, awarded W.M. Schlosser Co. Inc. the contract to attach the wind screen to the station, which mainline contractor Capital Rail Constructors built.

Five of the six Silver Line Phase 2 stations are designed to look like the Wiehle-Reston East Station, the end of Phase 1, while Dulles Airport Station was designed to resemble Dulles International Airport’s main terminal and the wind screen will mimic the slanted façade of the terminal’s front and rear elevation.

Renowned architect Eero Saarinen designed the main terminal, which has been nominated to inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Saarinen designed a number of well-known structures, including the TWA Flight Center at JFK International Airport in New York and the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Mo.
