More companies than 30 states and Washington, D.C
Nine Fairfax County-based companies, in industries ranging from financial services and hospitality to defense and technology consulting, hold spots on the latest Fortune 500, Fortune magazine’s list of the largest publicly traded companies in the United States.
With Tysons Corner-based Freddie Mac at No. 38, Falls Church area-based General Dynamics at No. 99, Tysons Corner-based Capital One Financial No. 101 and Falls Church area-based Northrop Grumman at No. 118, the top four Fairfax County companies remain unchanged from last year’s list.
Fairfax County has more companies on the list than 30 states and the District of Columbia. Fairfax County also is home to more than half of the 15 Fortune 500 companies based in the Washington, D.C., region. The others are in Montgomery County, MD (3), Washington, D.C. “The Fortune 500 highlights the fact that Fairfax County is the top location in the Washington area for corporations that want to access the right headquarters talent, the ability to get to markets worldwide conveniently, the proximity to private- and public-sector, (the opportunity to) take advantage of great public schools here and the cultural and historical attractions of the mid-Atlantic area,” said Gerald L. Gordon, president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority.
